This is me working on an outdoor art project sponsored by Medford Health Matters and funded by Mount Auburn Hospital. With several mosaic friends (children and adults), we put a huge sunflower mosaic on a electric utility switchbox outside Medford City Hall.

Although I have always loved making things, and have spent time doing many arts and crafts--wheel-thrown ceramics, watercolors, pastels, jewelry making, bead making, and quilting--I have focused on mosaics for ten years because I love building colorful things that also serve a function--a piece of jewelry, a house number, a trivet, a storage box. My pieces tend toward the three-dimensional, such as plant containers, mirrors, and lighting fixtures.
As an environmentalist and strong believer that the effects of climate change are upon us, I try to keep my impact on the Earth as small as I reasonably can. So I reclaim and reuse materials whenever possible--giving new life to old frames, broken pottery, yard sale furniture, discarded bits of wood from construction projects, stones, shells, keys, even plastic parts from ink toner cartridges. Over the past few years I have taught mosaics to many families, both at my studio and at various local venues as part of the "Making Art Together" project of the Medford Arts Center, Inc. My space at Jerome Street Studios in Medford, MA, is part of a fun, offbeat collection of other artists, including two painters, a fine jeweler, a guitarist, and a chef. |
